Public commenters urge parental-bill-of-rights adoption and religious-calendar accommodations

Several residents used public comment time at the Edison Township Board of Education meeting to urge policy changes and calendar accommodations.

Anthony Marra of Edison urged the board to adopt a parental bill of rights he has submitted to trustees, arguing it would not diminish student rights and citing legal precedent. "The Bill of Rights, which I sent to you, is completely consistent with what our US Supreme Court has said," Marra told the board. He urged the trustees to "put some teeth into it and adopt this Bill of Rights."

Sue Campione asked the board to offer early dismissals for Passover's first two days rather than holding a professional development day, saying early dismissals would allow Jewish families time for observances without changing the calendar substantially. "All I had simply asked for was the PD day be moved to the week before and two early dismissals," she said, asking the board to show parity with accommodations the district made for Eid.

Other commenters praised graduates and asked operational questions. Elizabeth Conway asked for clarity about subscription-bussing registration and timing, and Renee Cavaria, a band and choir parent, asked when the new choir director would be announced; administration replied the hiring process is ongoing and recommendations will be placed on a future agenda.

The board did not take formal action on the parental bill of rights or the Passover request during this meeting; members said they would consider the calendar and noted communications on the subscription-bussing portal would be issued in the coming days.
