Wilson County to host Pet Preparedness Day June 27 with free adoptions and retail discounts

Steve Gatlin, a representative of Wilson County Animal Control, and Megan Elders of Wilson Emergency Management announced a community Pet Preparedness Day scheduled for June 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tractor Supply parking lot, which the company is donating for the event.

The event is part of a statewide initiative organized by TEMA called "Ready Set Pet," Elders said, aimed at helping families include pets in emergency planning. "It is to help families prepare your pets in emergencies along with your children and your family to make sure your pets are also included and you have what you need to to keep them safe," Elders said.

Organizers said the day will include fire trucks on site, Wilson County's mobile adoption unit and on-the-spot dog adoptions. "Wilson Animal Control is going to waive adoption fees that day. That's right, so come and adopt a dog, and it doesn't cost you a penny," Gatlin said. The announcement said information tables will cover pet preparedness, low-cost spay and neuter services and vaccination options.

Tractor Supply (TSC) will participate as a partner; organizers said TSC will offer 10% off pet-related products purchased during the event hours. Wilson County EMA will also conduct a name drawing to give away two pet preparedness kits after the event.

The organizers encouraged residents to attend for information and adoption opportunities. No permit or registration requirements were mentioned in the announcement; organizers advised attendees to arrive during the posted hours.
