A board member announced that a donor established three endowed funds worth $100,000 with the Madison County Community Foundation to benefit Alexandria parks, the Alexandria Community Center and the Alexandria Monroe Historical Society.
The funds include a $50,000 endowment intended to support park projects and programs, and two $25,000 endowments for the community center and the local historical society, the board member said. The board will receive interest on the accounts each year and may choose either to spend the interest for projects or reinvest it to grow the principal.
"She created a fund ... of $50,000," the board member said, describing the donor as the mother of a local resident who asked that the gift not be made into a large public event. The member said the gift is intended to encourage outdoor recreation, annual programs and events and to sustain the community center as a local hub.
The announcement prompted questions about fund stewardship. The board member said Ben Davis, the community foundation administrator, is hosting a fundholders breakfast and that the park board typically receives an annual letter reporting interest earned; the member said she will ask that the park board president receive that notice directly to avoid lost communications.
The board discussed possible uses of expected interest: last year the board reported receiving more than $6,000 in interest from existing local funds, which they used for capital improvements including a walking path and chip-seal work. Members said possible near-term uses for the new funds include a small shelter and programming support. The board noted that further formal decisions about spending depend on the city budget and standard fiscal procedures.
The board member also invited colleagues to a library holiday open house and said the library staff will participate in community events.
The park board took no formal vote on spending and made no immediate directive; board members said procedural steps and budget approvals at the city level will guide whether and how interest is spent.
