Madison Hickman, city council for Troy’s third ward, outlined planned upgrades to Hurlinger Park and described a dam-removal project she said has been approved and funded.
“There's a new nine-hole Frisbee golf course coming. We're getting a restroom. We're getting a walking trail all the way around the park,” Hickman said, outlining work she said residents should begin to see later this year and into next year. She also said parking will be resurfaced and a portion of Crawford’s side of the street will be closed to expand park space while maintaining south-side access.
Hickman told the show that the dam-removal project “was already approved and…they secured the funding for it,” and that the river work will include a bike trail and river features that make it easier for kayakers to navigate the waterway. “...kayakers can go all the way down without any trouble,” she said.
The improvements are presented as staged investments: immediate playground and court upgrades are already visible, while the master-plan items and the dam project are slated to start later this year and continue into next year, according to Hickman. She described mockups of the proposed river and trail features but did not provide construction contracts, timelines with firm dates, or funding sources beyond saying the dam project funding has been secured.
Residents eager for the park amenities were invited to visit Hurlinger Park to see existing improvements and to watch for future work announcements from the city.
