The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District board opened its June 23 meeting by welcoming Deputy Fire Chief Shannon Lewis and recognizing the service of a departing deputy chief, then approved several operational items by unanimous vote.
Chief Edwards introduced Shannon Lewis and presented a badge to the incoming deputy chief, who described more than 30 years of fire and emergency management experience, including roles with the City of Stockton Fire Department and in Tennessee emergency management. Members of the board and attendees congratulated Lewis and invited members to a photo after the ceremony.
On business matters, the board approved a staff recommendation to increase blanket purchase order #75004872 for manpower/temporary services by $10,000, raising the not-to-exceed total from $125,000 to $135,000 to support funding for a part-time accountant in finance. There was no public comment; a motion was made and carried unanimously with three commissioners present.
The board also approved an amended and restated agreement with the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA) to extend emergency medical and fire dispatch services for one year, July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Staff said the updated annual fee schedule would increase to $777,652 from roughly $632,000; commissioners discussed contractual off-ramps, improved communication with line staff and the district’s longer-term goal of moving to a regional dispatch model. Commissioner Hill made the motion and Vice Chair Garcia seconded; the vote was unanimous.
Chief Edwards used the announcements portion of the meeting to report that the district adopted Level 1 fire restrictions in coordination with state and federal partners and described a major Hidden Valley debris-flow incident. He said the response involved multiple partners, including Washoe County Emergency Management and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, REMSA, animal services and community services; firefighters effected rescues and transitioned the incident to recovery with emergency management that evening. Chief Edwards said there were no human injuries or fatalities and that one cat died in the incident.
All motions recorded on the agenda carried unanimously with three members voting in favor and two commissioners absent. The board then recessed to a closed session under NRS 288.220 and NRS 241.016(3) and adjourned at about 9:45 a.m.
