Finance Committee approves sole-source purchase of video laryngoscopes for Wausau Fire Department

The City of Wausau Finance Committee on June 21 approved a sole-source purchase of Karl Storz video laryngoscopes for the Fire Department, a procurement staff said should improve outcomes on risky paramedic airway procedures.

Committee members heard from EMS Division Chief Matt Turmolin, who said the department currently uses two different types of video laryngoscopes; one set is about 10 years old and largely outdated. Turmolin said trade-in value from the vendor is not available and that possible resale revenue for older units would be minimal. He added the department could consider donating usable older units to nonprofit clinical flight teams working overseas.

Alder Watson moved to approve the sole-source request; Alder Neil seconded, and the motion carried by a voice vote. Committee discussion included whether procurement policy required marketing of existing equipment and confirmation that the vendor offers no trade-in allowance.
