The Fitchburg Public Safety and Human Services Committee on June 23 approved a series of sound permits for summer events and directed staff to place routine sound-permit applications under the consent agenda so small-event applicants do not have to appear in person.
Alder Herbst moved to amend one permit’s date, changing a private birthday event to Friday, July 31, 2026; the amendment passed by voice vote. Several other permits were approved by unanimous voice votes, including an African Christian Fellowship picnic (July 4), Redeemer City Church’s “Come Together” neighborhood event (July 18), a Woolard family reunion (July 11), a Cambodian Buddhist Society anniversary celebration (July 31–Aug 2), an engagement party at Heagle Jamestown Park (July 11), a recurring XES company picnic (July 11), a Jess Lex Homes ice cream social (Aug 13) and the Rec Department’s Movie in the Park (July 27).
“We routed this application to the public works department, the police department, and the fire department to see if they had any concerns … There’s been no complaints on their sound or events or anything,” staff member Tracy said about the Cambodian Buddhist Society application, referring to public-safety review before approval.
Nathan, representing Redeemer City Church, described his group’s July 18 event and said the amplified sound would be limited to a “couple speakers” and announcements to help neighbors connect. “Redeemer City Church has been in the neighborhood since 2019 … one of the ways we do that is just try to be a good neighbor,” Nathan said.
The committee also discussed complaints about past amplified events and asked organizers to adhere to scheduled end times. In the Lisa birthday permit discussion, alder members urged the registrant to “please adhere to the … 5:00 to 9:00” timeframe to avoid complaints from downwind neighbors.

The committee concluded a procedural discussion about reducing burdens on small-event applicants by placing sound-permit applications under the consent agenda. Alder Reichstadter and other members directed staff to implement the change; staff confirmed no ordinance text changes were required and that permits will continue to come before the committee but under the consent portion unless pulled for discussion.
The committee adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
