The EAC discussed data centers as a growing local interest following a well‑attended public lecture and recommended further education for the Board of Supervisors and residents.
Members said data centers can be sited on both undeveloped land and existing structures and raised specific concerns about backup generators: participants in the meeting described examples where sites relied on large fleets of generators (speakers cited reports of almost 300 units at a single site) and noted generator testing and run-time can cause local noise and emissions impacts. Members were unsure of exact testing frequency (participants discussed both daily and weekly testing schedules) and agreed those operational questions need expert input.
Jim urged a meeting with the township manager and proposed inviting technical experts to an educational presentation to explain siting, grid requirements, environmental side effects and possible ordinance responses. The EAC discussed the idea of drafting a preemptive ordinance or regulatory options so the township can set standards before applications arrive; members said legal and planning constraints must be reviewed with staff and counsel.
Next steps: EAC to coordinate with the township manager to host a data-center briefing with experts and to invite residents; Allan offered to help schedule and participate in outreach.
