Town staff told the Budget Committee that the York Ambulance Association has experienced multi-year deficits and is seeking emergency funding to maintain operations.
The town liaison summarized the select-board materials: "York Ambulance Association has been in a significant deficit for the last several years and needs to request emergency funding to continue operations," the liaison said, noting the materials show a current request around $180,000 and suggesting the select board and a convened task force will review funding options in the coming weeks.
Committee members discussed the association’s revenue mix — patient-service revenue, grants, town contract payments, memberships and donations — and noted collection rates on billed services have been low (described in materials as high-20s percent collected). The group said the immediate need is to address a short-term funding gap (the $180,000 request), followed by a renegotiation of the town’s contract with the association during the next contract cycle.
No formal funding decision was made at the select-board meeting that the liaison summarized. Committee members flagged that if the select board uses contingency or reserve funds for a short-term payment, the longer-term contract renegotiation could shift higher recurring town contributions into future budget cycles.
