School committee approves one-time ELHS fundraiser for Nov. 7, subject to town council approval

The East Longmeadow Public School Committee voted unanimously June 22 to permit a one-time fundraising event at East Longmeadow High School on Nov. 7, 2026, with the provision that any alcohol service requires town council approval.

Committee member Greg Johnson moved to approve the event; William Strawther seconded the motion. Johnson framed the vote as approval of a single scaled-down fundraiser rather than establishing an ongoing policy, saying the committee "would not like to set a precedent" and that future school committees could revisit similar requests.

Presenters for the ELA group said the proposal had been scaled down from an earlier gala plan and that the event would serve principally as a fundraiser and an opportunity to showcase the new building. Committee members discussed two possible November dates and potential conflicts with other town events before selecting Nov. 7. The motion passed 4-0.

Committee members noted additional steps required before the event can proceed: town council approval of any alcohol service and coordination with school scheduling and athletics.

The committee recorded the vote on the motion as approved; no amendments to the motion were recorded. The committee emphasized that this approval was limited to the single proposed event.
