Susan presented the probation office’s monthly and semiannual statistics and described current staffing and funding pressures.
“Our juvenile case load for LaSalle is 71,” Susan said, and she reported an active adult probation caseload of 461 and probation fees ordered to date of $39,250, with $17,272.68 collected to date. She also provided semianual circuitwide totals and fund balances for probation services and juvenile/adult probation expenses.
Committee members and Susan discussed staffing challenges: interviews are underway to fill an intensive-probation position and another officer is leaving in July, leaving the office short-handed until replacements are hired. Susan said she hopes to fill the opening quickly and that existing staff have been cross-trained to limit service interruptions.
On funding, committee members asked whether probation services funds — including a balance described in the discussion — could be better used for youth services such as treatment, mental-health support and family services. Susan noted the office already uses redeploy grants to provide caseworkers and wraparound services but agreed to work with the committee to explore how additional funds might be targeted to help youth and families.
Next steps: committee members requested further analysis of the probation services fund and possible uses to expand juvenile supports; Susan and interested committee members agreed to meet and brainstorm program options.
