The York County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously June 23 to approve a $100,000 grant, to be disbursed over two budget years, to support Moms on the Mission’s plan to build an ADA-compliant inclusive playground in downtown Henderson.
At a presentation to the board, organizer Sydney Morton said the nonprofit’s design would allow children with mobility impairments as well as very young children and caregivers to access play surfaces directly from sidewalks and include age-appropriate sections for children five and younger. ‘‘Henderson does not have an ADA-compliant inclusive park,’’ Morton said, adding the project would also benefit visiting families during community events.
Commissioners described the project as a quality-of-life investment and noted the county’s prior support for recreation projects such as a pavilion in Gresham, the Payton Parker Lane playground and a local splash pad. The board’s packet shows the county would provide $50,000 in the 2026–27 budget year and $50,000 the following year; Morton said the group hopes to raise the remaining funds through private fundraising and grants.
Commissioner discussion emphasized tourism and community benefits. One commissioner said the seed funding could help the group raise an additional $300,000 it still needs. Following discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the grant; a second was recorded and a roll-call vote recorded every member voting yes.
The board’s approval is the latest action to support small-town recreation projects funded from the county’s visitor and community funds; the grant will be subject to usual contracting and reporting requirements. Moms on the Mission will return to the board for any contracting steps required before funds are disbursed.
