Commissioners reported strong community turnout at recent events during the June 22 Equity Commission meeting, praising the Night Market's themed nights and the Juneteenth celebration while flagging parking and traffic-management challenges.
Veronica Hand and several commissioners said the Night Market has grown since last year, with greater vendor diversity and increased visitor counts. Commissioners noted contractor and volunteer support helped manage vendor setup and operations. One commissioner said the event drew visitors from Olympia and Tumwater and urged early arrival because on-site parking filled quickly.
"It was a great night at Juneteenth... people were everywhere," a commissioner said, thanking organizers and noting vendors that reported brisk sales. The commission reported a final Juneteenth attendance count of 1,622 people (including children).
Commissioners also confirmed the Pride Night Market and other themed markets are continuing and encouraged commission participation at upcoming events.
Safety and forum planning: in director remarks Veronica and staff described outreach with the Hispanic Roundtable to plan a proposed September hybrid community forum. That group expressed strong interest in a hybrid format but raised safety concerns about possible ICE activity around parking and entry points; attendees asked that the city consider locations and access that would reduce risk. Staff discussed options including hosting the event in the new police station's training room (if available), arranging secure gated access or shifting to a format where panelists are in person and attendees participate remotely.
Why this matters: the Night Market and Juneteenth serve as community outreach and engagement channels for Lacey, drawing cross-jurisdictional visitors and highlighting the city's role as an events host; the planned Hispanic roundtable raises operational and safety issues that could affect participation and the forum's ability to meet its goals.
What happens next: staff will continue planning and due diligence, including conversations with the police department about possible secure access and checking constraints on in-kind use of city resources. Commissioners asked staff to report back with feasible formats and logistics for the September forum.
