Greenville City Council approved a resolution appointing Lucas C. Marchant as chief municipal court judge for a two‑year term beginning July 1, 2026. Marchant was sworn in at the meeting and delivered brief remarks thanking council, colleagues and family.
City Attorney Lee Ley presented the resolution and outlined Marchant’s background: 12 years as a prosecutor with the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office (including head of the violent crimes unit), subsequent private practice in criminal defense and civil litigation, service as assistant city judge since November of last year and local community involvement. Ley told council Marchant brings "deep trial experience, fluency on all sides of the criminal docket, and a lifelong commitment to this community."
After the vote, Marchant took the oath and said he was "grateful for the confidence" council placed in him and intends to "bring the city’s standards of fairness, respect and service to the municipal court every day." He recognized outgoing Judge Holly for 30 years of service and pledged to call on him for guidance.
Council approved the appointment; the transcript records one council member saying "I opposed" during the voice/roll call exchange but does not identify that member by name. The appointment proceeded and Marchant was sworn in at the meeting.
