Council opened a multi‑month planning discussion to mark Greenbelt’s 90th anniversary in 2027 and directed staff to develop a theme, timeline and outreach plan.
The conversation began after councilors viewed Maryland Municipal League materials that highlighted Greenbelt’s history. Mayor Pro Tim Weaver and others suggested centering main events on Greenbelt Day weekend while supporting partner organizations and advisory boards to host complementary activities across the year.
Council members proposed a mix of public programming: museum exhibits, a possible gala or ticketed dinner modeled on prior anniversaries, a historical video, performances (theater or 1930s–era musical programming), story walks, and expanded fireworks tied to Greenbelt Day so more residents could enjoy the event. Several councilors stressed staff should lead execution while advisory boards, the museum, local businesses and community groups contribute ideas and programming.
Council Member McKenna asked that planning reflect the city’s full and diverse history, including programs by the Greenbelt Museum and the Black Culture Committee, so the commemoration does not focus only on early 20th‑century narratives. Council agreed staff should convene a small stakeholder listening session (possible CRAB or museum representatives) and return with a proposed theme, baseline creative direction (colors/branding) and a timeline so partners can align events.
Next steps: city manager will assemble staff leads, draft a theme and timeline, solicit advisory‑board ideas and begin outreach to potential partner organizations for a year‑long set of commemorations and Greenbelt Day weekend programming.
