The United Nations spokesperson said the Security Council adopted a resolution authored by Denmark and Pakistan and co-sponsored by 150 member states calling for strengthened efforts to investigate and prosecute crimes against UN personnel serving in peacekeeping operations.
The spokesperson noted historical and recent casualties: since 1948, 1,095 UN peacekeepers have been killed as a result of malicious acts, including 359 since 2013; she welcomed recent convictions — 103 individuals convicted since 2020 related to killings of 35 peacekeepers and two UN experts — but said much more must be done to prevent impunity.
Separately, the spokesperson announced that Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator, said US$110 million was being released from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support women and girls in several of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The allocation will be channeled through UN Women and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with local women-led organizations and will span underfunded emergencies including Ethiopia, Syria, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Myanmar, Mozambique and Mali, the spokesperson said.
The briefing also noted MONUSCO handed over about US$447,000 for road rehabilitation, agricultural and socio-economic projects benefiting several hundred beneficiaries and nearly 20,000 residents in eastern DRC, a separate operational support action discussed during peacekeeping updates.
