The Shapleigh Planning Board reviewed an application to convert a former quilt-shop space at 120 Emery Mills into a salon called Downtown Shag and scheduled a public hearing for July 14 to complete review of outstanding technical items.
Applicants identified themselves in the record as Ashley, Crystal and Maggie; owner Paul Muse is listed as the property owner. The proposal calls for six service stations, operating hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an intended opening in early August. The board confirmed the building footprint (26 by 40 feet) and that the existing structure and street frontage are grandfathered where they fall short of current dimensional minima (assessor lists the lot at 20,473 square feet; minimum for a new commercial principal building is 80,000 square feet).
Parking, septic and safety: the board reviewed a parking plan showing 21 spaces and concluded required parking can be met; it also requested the applicant obtain a site-evaluator review of the subsurface-wastewater system (HHT/HHE forms) to document whether the existing system can support the additional chairs and employees. A lighting plan for the upper parking area and confirmation of dumpster arrangements were also requested prior to the public hearing.
Next steps: the board set a public hearing for July 14 at 6:30 p.m. and asked applicants to submit the requested plan updates (lighting, lot-coverage figures) and septic/site-evaluator documentation so the board can finalize findings at the hearing.
