Kindergarten enrollment drops; district launches outreach to preschool families

Superintendent Dr. Griffin told the board on June 11 that kindergarten enrollment in the district has declined notably over recent years and that staff are launching outreach to boost registrations.

Dr. Griffin said the district saw 796 kindergarten enrollments in 2022–23 and 667 in 2025, a drop of nearly 130 students compared with the earlier year. She noted that the 2021–22 cohort and pandemic effects can complicate year-to-year trajectories and said the district will conduct a concentrated enrollment campaign over the next weeks, contacting preschool families with 4-year-olds who should register for kindergarten.

Dr. Griffin said she will report updated enrollment numbers at the July board meeting so the board can determine any necessary staffing adjustments; under the district's collective bargaining agreement, kindergarten class sizes and teacher assignments drive staffing decisions.

What happens next: The district will pursue an outreach campaign to register eligible children and return to the board with updated counts in July to assess teacher placement and other staffing implications.
