The Public Service Commission approved administrative minutes from its May 20, 2026 term and heard remarks from Commissioner Stamps pressing staff to expand investigative work beyond customer complaints.
During the administrative portion the commission approved the minutes by motion and voice vote. Commissioner Stamps said investigators currently spend the bulk of their time on customer complaints and that the commission should focus investigators more on implementation and on-the-ground oversight of major projects and rulings. "Our investigators should be allowed to do more than what they're doing," Stamps said, adding that the office should not be "an extension of the complaint department for the utilities." He said staff should be more aggressive in regulating and checking that project implementation meets commission rulings.
Stamps also thanked colleagues and staff for hosting a C-suite conference for regulators from other states and territories, saying it was a success and helped showcase Mississippi.
Why it matters: Shifting investigative effort toward proactive oversight could change how the commission enforces rules, inspects projects and tracks compliance with rulings.
What’s next: No formal directive or motion to change investigative powers was recorded in the meeting; commissioners asked staff to take the comments under advisement.
