Residents and board members raised safety concerns about several accidents on State Route 41 near Minihonk Lake and discussed options to calm traffic on state-maintained roads.
A nearby homeowner told the board this was the third crash near their house in the time they have lived there. Board members discussed moving the town’s mobile speed sign nearer Blake Hill, but several members noted that the three major roads in Mount Vernon — North Road, Belgrade Road and Route 41 — are state-maintained and that the board’s options are therefore limited. The board agreed to contact the state traffic engineer after the holidays to review accident rates, curve gradients and possible countermeasures such as lighted curve signs.
Remy, participating online, said lowering the posted speed had been discussed previously but questioned enforcement capacity, saying there was no practical place to station a trooper between Blake Hill and CV Corner. A board member noted the state had two village-mounted speed signs on order and would install them; separate school-zone signs were also on order.
Board members also raised concerns about delineators and center-post treatments in the village after residents reported people swerving to avoid them, and said a state review should consider sidewalks or other pedestrian-safety options. No formal vote was taken; the board placed the item on a follow-up list to contact the state engineer and to consider additional local measures if allowable.
