At a Senate Committee on Appropriations hearing, a senator criticized the president's recent budget for omitting deficit and debt projections and asked whether agency officials would ensure those figures are included in the next submission to Congress.
The senator said, "The law actually requires the budget that the president submits to have deficit and debt uh information," and asked directly, "Will you push to make sure deficit and debt information is in the next submission to Congress?"
An agency official replied, "Senator, certainly will work to follow the law. I would note that we will release additional uh projections of that sort like we did last year in the mid‑session review which will come this summer." The official also referenced prior testimony by Director Vought when discussing how the agency has handled those materials.
The senator returned to the point, saying Director Vought told lawmakers he omitted deficit numbers because he did not want to "confuse the American public." The senator called that rationale insulting, saying, "That says the American public are idiots. They're not idiots," and added that Vought was "not authorized to break the law," urging the official to raise a "yellow flag" if leadership sought to do so.
No formal motion or vote occurred during the exchange. The official committed to follow legal requirements and to publish additional projections in the mid‑session review this summer; the senator pressed for compliance and oversight.
