The Kansas Corporation Commission on June 18 approved an order denying a consumer complaint from Miss Hudson against Evergy in Docket No. EKCE0160 COOM.
Brian Fedotin, a commission staff presenter, summarized the record: "Miss Hudson filed a formal complaint against EverG, alleging she was wrongfully disconnected despite getting confirmation that payment had been received." Fedotin said Evergy reported the attempted payment was returned by the bank for insufficient funds and that the utility had not received the money. Commission staff concluded the account balance was insufficient when the transaction was processed and recommended dismissal of the complaint. Staff also recommended Evergy consider clarifying its customer payment confirmation screen to state that service could be disconnected until the payment clears.
Fedotin told commissioners Miss Hudson did not respond to Evergy’s motion to dismiss or to staff’s report and recommendation. After discussion, commissioners moved, seconded and approved the proposed order denying the formal complaint. The transcript records that the order denies the complaint because the only evidence in the record demonstrates Evergy never received the payment Miss Hudson attempted to make in April 2025.
The commission’s action denies Miss Hudson’s request that Evergy honor a "payment received" status, waive certain fees and immediately restore service. The transcript does not show a recorded roll-call vote by name, and no additional remedial measures were ordered beyond the recommendation that Evergy consider clearer payment confirmations.
