HDC approves fixed storefront windows at former Amelia Tavern building

The Historic District Commission approved a certificate of approval to enclose the former Amelia Tavern’s open garage doors at 318 Center Street with fixed storefront windows and a recessed brick knee wall to match existing piers.

Staff explained that, although the 2016 building is non‑contributing, any change in openings requires HDC review. Applicant Anne Pittman (Cotner Architects) said the intent was to enclose an open dining area to increase indoor seating. Several commissioners said they would miss the openness to the street but did not find a code basis to deny the change.

The motion to approve without conditions carried by roll call; staff noted the applicant will coordinate details such as the knee‑wall brick match and that no additional HDC conditions were required for the final COA.
