Riverhead officials announced on June 18 that town historian Geette will serve as grand marshal for the town’s 250th parade set for July 4.
Supervisor Halpin presented Geette with flowers and a certificate and asked Councilman Rothwell to pin a 250th commemorative American flag. Council members praised Geette’s volunteer work preserving local history and noted her family connection to the Daughters of the American Revolution.
“I’m excited about 250 years,” Geette said, accepting the honor. Board members said Geette’s decades of volunteer work at the historical society and at community events made her a fitting choice.
Officials also joked that Paul Revere’s horse would lead the parade and that Geette would be invited to take part in that opening. The town asked residents to attend the July 4 parade, where Geette will lead the procession.
The board made the announcement after returning from a brief executive session earlier in the morning; no parade-related votes were recorded during the public session.
