Commission approves Pilgrim Lake cyanobacteria‑monitoring buoy pilot; night light disabled

The commission approved an administrative review allowing the Orleans Pond Coalition to deploy a leased data buoy on Pilgrim Lake this season to monitor cyanobacteria and other water‑quality parameters.

Staff explained the buoy requires a small (25‑lb) anchor and presents no negative resource impacts; the buoy’s lighting may be disabled at night to limit disturbance to neighbors and wildlife. Rich Levy (on the call) and Orleans Pond Coalition representatives said the device will be leased for the season and returned in November; the program will test real‑time alerts for cyanobacteria via an LED system but the pilot team agreed to disable nighttime color coding and operate the light at very low luminosity or off at night. The commission added a condition that staff copy the harbor master and secure any needed mooring approval; members approved the administrative review unanimously.
