The Villa Park Plan Commission voted June 17 to recommend Option 2 for improvements to the village-owned parking lot serving the Villa Park Historical Society Museum. Staff said the option would widen the lot, convert to perpendicular parking in places and increase capacity from 31 to 35 stalls while adding improved sidewalk and handicap access.
Assistant Village Manager Greer said the village is under contract with a consulting engineer and has discussed proposals with DuPage County; the county raised no objections to the concepts. Greer described two alternatives: Option 1 (one-way with angled parking and a relocated path) and Option 2 (wider layout with perpendicular parking, more stalls and the flexibility to operate as two-way or convert to one-way traffic). "This option increases the parking stalls from 31 to 35 parking stalls," Greer said.
Commissioners discussed emergency access and maneuverability; several members expressed a public-safety preference for Option 2 because of greater lane width and easier access for emergency vehicles. One commissioner who observed the lot recommended ensuring a clear exit to avoid backing challenges. The commission moved, seconded and approved a recommendation that staff proceed with Option 2 for final design and to forward that recommendation to the Village Board.
Why it matters: The change is framed primarily as beautification and functional improvement tied to broader downtown redevelopment and the temporary loss of other off-street parking during nearby construction. Staff said funding is expected to come from TIF funds and that construction would not be scheduled while the adjacent union parking facility is under reconstruction.
Next steps: Staff will instruct engineering consultants to proceed with final designs for Option 2 and will forward the recommendation to the Village Board; formal construction timing was described as several years out (no firm funding or schedule set).
