Washington County officials told the Public Safety Committee they intend to apply for a Bureau of Transportation Safety grant to support enforcement on local roads.
The presenter described three eligible enforcement areas — OWI, speed and seat‑belt enforcement — and proposed an initial $20,000 request to focus on speed enforcement during peak summer months, noting other municipalities had expressed interest in participating and the county would administer the grant locally.
The county official explained the grant requires a 25% local match. "It's still a 25% local match of funding," the presenter said, meaning the $20,000 request would require about $5,000 in local matching contributions to be shared among participating police departments and the sheriff's office.
Committee members debated whether $20,000 was sufficient. The presenter said the county could pursue larger requests in future cycles if demand and municipal participation grows. Several supervisors expressed support for collaboration across departments; one said he was cautious about using enforcement for seat‑belt stops but supported OWI and speed enforcement interventions.
The committee gave consensus to proceed with the modest, initial application and local administration of the grant.
