The Custer County Board of Commissioners voted June 17 to buy a new centralized camera server and related licensing, approving an approximate $21,000 capital purchase to replace a failed system and consolidate recordings from 25 county cameras.
IT Director John told commissioners the new server would centralize cameras now located at the courthouse, the sheriff’s office and the Wetmore ballot‑box site, provide on‑site retention of “two to six months” and back up offsite for longer retention. "The server itself would give us retention of two to six months on site. The server would then back up offsite and give us seven years of retention of that data," John said during his presentation.
The director offered cost details: camera hardware capabilities vary (standalone, night vision, pan/tilt) and licensing per camera was estimated between $99 and $113, with a one‑time server licensing fee. John said the vendor quote for the server hardware was about $17,500 and that total one‑time costs, including camera licenses, would be roughly $20,325–$20,675; the board rounded the motion to an approximate $21,000 capital authorization. John warned commissioners that delaying the purchase could raise the price: "I am told that if we don't act now that next month that that is going to go to $22,000."
Commissioners discussed scope concerns — which sites must be included in this purchase and whether to limit security details discussed in open meeting — before moving and seconding the motion to approve. The motion passed; commissioners voted in favor and the chair was authorized to execute the purchase as presented.
The board characterized the expenditure as a capital improvement; John said the county’s current server is offline and the replacement is intended to be a durable investment. He estimated the new server should remain serviceable for 10–20 years, depending on technology shifts. Commissioners asked for future budget planning to account for potential expansion to additional county locations and for replacement cameras as needed.
