At the Jan. 19 meeting the Midland School District board received superintendent and principal reports on enrollment, assessments and student accomplishments.
Superintendent Toby Crosby reported total district enrollment of 402 students. He provided grade-by-grade counts for the high school (192) and elementary (210, up 4 from the prior month) and preschool enrollment totaling 97 (Pre-K 71; Tiny Tots 18; Tiny Tots Too 8).
High School Principal Cindy Armstrong announced spelling bee winners Wyatt Evridge (first place), Cooper Adams (second) and Edie Gilmer (third). Armstrong also reported that FCCLA competitors earned state qualifications and awards (Andee Whitener: gold in Promote & Publicize; Heath Darnell, Lynn Scoggin and Nakita Gresham: silver in Chapter Service and Project Display). Teacher Kassy Whitener recently attended an FCCLA advisor summit in Washington, D.C.
Armstrong presented fall-to-winter ATLAS interim assessment level percentages for ELA, math and science (documented in the minutes). Upcoming events listed in the minutes include weekly ACT prep classes beginning Jan. 31, regional and county quiz bowls, the county spelling bee on Feb. 3, parent-teacher conferences and a high school Valentine's dance on Feb. 12.
Valerie Hibbitts, the Pre-K lead, was noted as absent due to illness and provided no report. The minutes show an executive session later in the meeting; no additional public details about personnel or confidential items were offered in open session.
