The Burke County Public Schools Board approved several instructional and personnel items, including revisions to promotion policy IHA, procedural guidance for grading and interventions, renewal of a shared educator position and approval of a student band trip.
A teaching-and-learning presenter described proposed changes to promotion policy IHA: setting a 70% passing threshold on the report card or demonstrating grade-level mastery on end-of-grade assessments for K–2 (with K–2 end-of-grade testing newly implemented by the district), and revising middle-grade promotion language to require a 70% average in five of seven enrollments. The presenter also described procedural recommendations: adoption of a four-point rating scale for standards-based K–2 report cards, retaining a minimum 55 report-card grade to allow students recovery opportunities, and requiring MTSS-aligned interventions for grade replacement and mastery supports.
The board voted to approve the promotion-policy revisions after discussion and requested a follow-up work session on procedures. The board also voted to renew a 4‑H/educator position (the district pays half of salary and benefits under a contract with the extension office) and to approve an increase in that salary; the transcript indicates the vote on renewal was taken via poll with at least three members recorded in favor. The board approved a band field trip to New York as presented.
After these items the board made and approved a motion to enter executive session to discuss personnel matters.
