The Roanoke Rapids City Schools board voted unanimously to approve a contract for the Rena (Roanoke) High School boiler replacement contingent on receiving county or lottery repair funds.
Facilities committee chair Mr. Claus told the board that the lowest bid for the boiler replacement was about $172,000 --roughly $35,000 higher than earlier estimates and that the district would ask the county for the additional appropriation. "We need to go back to the county and ask for additional funds," Mr. Claus said during the facilities report. The board voted to approve the contract, with the motion explicitly conditioned on the availability of county/lottery funding.
Mr. Whitmire noted that asbestos-removal reimbursement could offset part of costs that are already included in the project budget and asked whether that reimbursement would reduce the gap; district staff said reimbursements would be returned to capital outlay for use on other projects but that up-front payment remains necessary.
The facilities committee also reviewed capital-improvement priorities and raised questions about vendor/IT access to security cameras (see policy coverage). The board recorded unanimous votes on the consent agenda and the boiler allocation; meeting minutes show the motions carried without dissent.
Next steps: staff will seek the additional funding from county authorities and proceed with the project if the contingent funding is confirmed.
