The Temple Terrace City Council approved a change order June 16 to replace the generator that backs up Fire Station 1 and to provide backup power for the city’s new Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
City staff reported the existing generator had been labeled 208 volts but was producing 240 volts, creating compatibility problems with the EOC design. Staff recommended replacing the aging unit with a modern 400-kW generator and rewiring Fire Station 1 to the current 208-V standard.
City Manager Baye explained the generator equipment cost and the associated electrical installation total $338,540; the fire department requested authorization not to exceed $375,000 to cover potential contingencies. Staff said lead time for delivery is long and that, because of scheduling concerns and hurricane-season timing, the department solicited multiple quotes rather than pursuing a full competitive bid.
Council members questioned whether the city could use an existing contract (piggyback) or pursue additional procurement checks; staff said they would follow up with the fire chief and report back. Chief Morley confirmed the new unit will fit on the existing pad with some modifications and that the existing generator is natural gas.
Council moved and adopted the resolution authorizing the change order and generator purchase with the not-to-exceed authorization; the motion carried with no recorded opposition in the meeting transcript.
Staff will return with any contract details requested by council (for example, delivery penalties or piggyback options) and proceed with procurement and installation scheduling.
