The Temple Terrace City Council on June 16 approved two surtax-funded paving contracts covering a set of preapproved streets.
Public Works Director Jason Warnefield told the council the city was awarded roughly $9.4 million in surtax funds (administered by DOT after the state resolved prior litigation) and asked the council to authorize work authorizations for two contractors. The first contract, with Asphalt Paving Systems, covers West River Drive, East River Drive, Druid Hills Road and Mabel Place for $1,804,736.97. The second, with Superior Asphalt Inc., covers South Riverhills Drive and North Riverhills Drive for $1,149,560.50.
Warnefield said engineering solicited quotes and selected the most responsive vendors per street, which is why two contractors were chosen rather than a single vendor for all streets. Councilmembers asked about paving cycles and scheduling; staff said work is being timed for cooler months and that the pavement condition index remains under review.
Residents asked why different vendors were used; staff reiterated that quote responses and pricing drove the selections. The council moved and adopted both resolutions; no recorded opposition appears in the meeting transcript.
Staff will work with contractors to finalize schedules and will return to council if contract amendments or additional approvals are required.
