The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners on June 16 unanimously appointed Rich Fischer as interim county sheriff to fill a vacancy created by Sheriff Gnickel's resignation. Commissioners said their priority was continuity and minimizing disruption in the department until voters select the next sheriff in the August election.
The commission explained the appointment process before the vote: the Republican Central Committee had forwarded three candidates — Rich Fischer, Richie Ko and Aussie Kzvich — and commissioners opened the floor for nominations. Commissioner Richards nominated Fischer; that nomination was seconded and carried on a unanimous voice vote. After the vote, Judge Susanna Robinson administered the oath of office.
Why it mattered: Commissioners repeatedly said the immediate goal was to preserve department stability. Commissioner Richards summarized the board’s view that the appointee should “minimize disruption while carrying this agency forward,” noting the unusual possibility the department could see several leadership changes over a short period. Commissioners said they did not intend immediate policy changes and expected the appointment to allow the office to operate smoothly through the campaign season.
What’s next: Fischer takes the interim role immediately. Commissioners said the public will have the final choice in the upcoming election and the board expects to work with the interim sheriff and department leadership to ensure continuity of services.
