Tim Leffel, the district’s outstanding business administrator, told the Davis County School District board at a public hearing that the budget presented in May remains unchanged and has been available online and for public inspection since the day after the workshop.
Leffel said, “Nothing's changed,” and that after the public hearing and the regular board meeting he would ask the board for two motions: to adopt the final legal budget for the current year and to adopt the initial budget for next year "incorporating the certified tax rate, which means we're not raising taxes, therefore no TNT." The hearing drew no public speakers, the board president said.
Why it matters: adopting the final legal budget and the initial budget is the procedural step that allows the district to finalize spending for the current year and begin next year’s budget process. Using the certified tax rate, as Leffel described, indicates the district does not intend to increase property tax rates as part of this adoption.
Leffel also said the budget document has been available since immediately after the May workshop and that no members of the public had come to inspect the physical documents, though they may have reviewed materials online. The president of the board thanked Leffel and moved the meeting from the public hearing into the regular board agenda, where the motions will be brought forward.
Next steps: The board will be asked to make the two motions Leffel described — adopting the final legal budget for the current year and adopting the initial budget for next year incorporating the certified tax rate. The transcript does not record the motions being made or any vote results.
