Council schedules public hearing to update Chapter 36 (Fire Rescue Department) to reflect staffing changes

The Lamar City Council voted June 16 to set a public hearing on July 7, 2026, to consider amendments to Chapter 36 (Fire Rescue Department) of the Lamar Code of Ordinances designed to reflect the department’s current staffing and job duties.

Administration said the proposed changes are intended to clean up ordinance language to match how the department currently operates after personnel adjustments made following the retirement of Assistant Chief Weice. 'This just reflects currently how our staffing is with a chief and one assistant instead of two, and then a couple battalion chiefs that are on the day shifts,' said Dave, who presented the update for administration. He said the job descriptions and chapter language are being updated so the ordinance accurately reflects operational responsibilities while he is preparing to depart in the coming months.

Council approved a motion to establish a public hearing for July 7, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. to consider the ordinance updates. No final ordinance was adopted at the meeting; the hearing will allow public comment and further review before any changes take effect.
