The Harwich Board of Health carried out reorganization and administrative business at its June 16, 2026 meeting, approved business permits, and heard updates from Health Director Carrie on several summer food-security initiatives.
At the start of the meeting members debated whether to postpone annual reorganization until absent member Janet could participate but chose to proceed so positions would be in place. Members nominated Kevin for chair and Ron for vice chair; nominations were seconded and voice votes recorded. Later in the meeting, after other business, staff informed Janet that the board had reorganized earlier and that she had been voted chair. The transcript contains an apparent inconsistency between the earlier nominations (Kevin) and the later announcement that Janet had been voted chair; the minutes should clarify the final, recorded outcome.
The board approved a list of permits for June (seven on the first page and eight on the second) and added three permits that had been carried from the May minutes: an item listed as Ashikumar Patel, a Subway location, and Bagelhound under new owner Abigail Campbell. A board member queried one listing (Heart of the Sea) because it showed the address as 7‑Eleven Main Street; staff clarified that any address listed in the permits indicates a Harwich location.
Health Director Carrie reported that the People’s Garden has been planted for the 2026 growing season and that staff plan to weigh produce and donations to measure year‑to‑year success. She thanked DPW for building raised beds at the community garden and said the People’s Fridge will accept leftover meals from the Harwich Recreational Camp program; the fridge is supported by grant funding, a credit line approval at Shaw, and proceeds from a local festival. Carrie asked the board and community to help publicize volunteer opportunities and resource partners.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
