City of St. Albans officials warned listeners on the city podcast that CSX plans multi-day closures of several railroad crossings and urged residents to plan alternate routes.
Mayor Scott James said the Third Street underpass will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while crews work on the bridge above, and that CSX has told the city to expect closures on or around June 25 affecting B Street, C Street, Second Street, Fifth Street and Walnut Street for about five days to perform crossing improvements and paving work.
"There's not a thing. We don't own that property. CSX owns that property," James said, explaining the city has limited control over timing but is coordinating with emergency services. He added the fire department has made plans to reach either side of town during closures.
Detours and impacts: Officials advised drivers that routable alternatives include the Third Street underpass (when open), Boone Street tunnel and Spruce Street/West End approaches; alleyways behind local businesses will remain usable for limited access. Parking behind certain businesses will be reserved for festival and vendor use during closures.
What to watch for: The city said it will post updates on social media and its website as CSX provides more precise schedules. No enforcement actions, fines or new ordinances were discussed on the podcast.
