Council grants distance‑waiver for downtown retail wine seller at 211 Market Street

The Alpharetta City Council approved a minimum‑distance variance (PH‑26‑02) on June 15 to allow Grove and Barrel Provisions LLC to sell bottled wine for off‑premises consumption at 211 Market Street Suite 5C in downtown Alpharetta.

Planning staff (Mr. Husky) said the applicant’s distance survey shows the property is 172 feet from First Baptist Church, 172 feet from Alpharetta Christian Academy and 285 feet from Brook Street Park. Staff confirmed all application materials and notifications were submitted and recommended the council grant the variance, noting the site is in a downtown area with several establishments licensed for on‑premises alcohol consumption.

The applicant, who identified himself as Jose and explained he was born in Barcelona, described a retail store focusing on olive oils, vinegars and a curated selection of about 30 wine labels for customers to purchase and take home. No public commenters appeared in favor or opposition.

The motion to approve PH‑26‑02 was made by Mayor Pro Tim Merkel and seconded by Councilman Heypes; the council approved the variance unanimously.

Next steps: Staff will complete any required permitting and licensing steps under the city’s alcohol ordinance consistent with the granted variance.
