Commission extends board terms, sets first readings on conditional-use and accessory-structure ordinances

The Huron City Commission adopted Resolution 2026-06 on June 15 to extend existing board and commission terms through July 31 to accommodate recent election-law timing changes; appointees are to be seated at the first meeting in August.

Staff also presented first readings of two ordinances. Ordinance 2283-23-420 edits municipal code language to reflect current practice by naming the hearing examiner — not the planning commission — as the recommending hearing body for conditional-use permits and variances. City planner Barry said the change is housekeeping and does not alter the hearing examiner’s current responsibilities.

The commission also gave first reading to Ordinance 2284-23-421, which would permit small greenhouses (approximately 100 square feet) in residential districts R1 through R5, treating them similarly to sheds and other accessory structures; Barry said the 100-square-foot threshold tracks fire-code limits. The planning commission recommended both items unanimously and second readings were set for June 29, 2026.

A commissioner asked how responsibilities would change under the hearing-examiner approach; staff said practice would not change, only the ordinance wording. Motions for the resolution and the first readings were moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
