Resident urges Taylorville council to address audit findings and BDD overexpenditures

During the public-comment portion of the June 15 meeting, a resident who identified themself as Morocco urged the Taylorville City Council to address unresolved audit findings and to inform taxpayers about corrective steps.

Morocco said it has been "nearly two months" since they submitted a formal letter requesting answers to issues raised in public audits and that, to date, "taxpayers have not received a comprehensive response." They warned that re-hiring the same audit firm without addressing previously-identified systemic issues risks repeating past accounting and oversight failures and called for greater transparency and accountability from city leadership.

The speaker also raised concerns about the status of balancing the Business Development District (BDD) fund and cited "significant overexpenditures" that occurred during Steve Craig's tenure as BDD chairman. Morocco said with multiple council seats and the mayor's office on next year's ballot, "the public will be looking for leadership and prioriti[es] that prioritize transparency."

No formal council action or response resolving the audit questions occurred during the meeting; the council moved to adjourn following public comment.
