Senate honors Korean veterans with SJR 17 urging federal clarification on burial benefits

The California Senate took up and approved SJR 17 on June 16, a resolution introduced by Senator Choi honoring Republic of Korea veterans who fought alongside American troops in Vietnam and later became U.S. citizens. The resolution urges federal clarification so states can extend burial and memorial benefits in state veterans’ cemeteries to eligible allied veterans without risking federal cemetery funding.

"SJR 17 urges Congress and the President to allow states to extend burial and memorial benefits in state veterans' cemeteries to these veterans who left Korea to stand shoulder to shoulder in Vietnam with the American soldiers," Senator Choi said.

Senator Archuleta, chair of the Military and Veterans Committee, spoke in support and noted the advanced age of many of these veterans. The resolution does not create a new state benefit or expand eligibility on its own; it requests federal guidance to avoid jeopardizing federal cemetery funding.

The resolution passed on the Senate floor after sponsor remarks and a roll‑call vote.
