The Fremont Community Schools superintendent reported significant facilities work and an unexpected water-damage event that will require cleanup and insurance coordination.
Officials discovered the main sewer pipe was "about 99% clogged"; when crews lifted the old pipe it disintegrated and required replacement. The superintendent said the district opted for cast pipe because of heat tolerance concerns where hot water from boilers would otherwise reach temperatures above 140°F; cast was selected over PVC to avoid premature failure in that environment. Cement backfill is scheduled and interior repair work (new carpet, tile and corridor restoration) will follow when contractors complete site remediation.
Separately, an extended power outage at the early learning center caused the sprinkler system air pressure to change and water to enter the system, flooding six rooms. The district has contracted a restoration firm and notified its insurance carrier; administrators scheduled a meeting with the insurer and restoration vendor to scope ceiling, wall and carpet repairs. The superintendent said the district did not expect the sprinkler failure and described the cleanup as "a big job".
Trustees received updates on related projects: roof work that was disrupted by a storm, replacement fencing at athletic facilities, and renovation work on biology classrooms. The board was informed that bus inspections are scheduled and that the superintendent had been selected for a professional leadership program (travel to Panama) at no cost to the district.
The superintendent said staff will report back as contractors complete the cleanup and as insurance conversations progress; no firm dollar amounts for repairs were provided at the meeting.
