The Millis Select Board on June 15 approved a license agreement allowing the Millis Food Pantry to use the first floor of the Veterans Memorial Building (64 Exchange Street) and separately authorized placing Millis historical artifacts on the building’s second floor while staff pursue an occupancy permit.
Town counsel reviewed the license form in the packet; the agreement requires the food pantry to pay 50% of the building utilities because it will occupy roughly half the space. Town leaders said moving the pantry out of a church basement and into town-owned space has reduced volunteer time for stocking and improved public access.
Members of the historical commission and a volunteer with museum experience told the board they will inventory, clean and transfer items for a planned museum display while the upstairs is prepared for occupancy. The board voted to authorize the town administrator to sign the license and to permit temporary placement of artifacts upstairs while the town finalizes occupancy requirements.
The board directed staff to ensure an inventory is maintained and to coordinate with the historical commission on cataloging and conservation work; the board also asked to be updated on insurance and occupancy-permit status.
