Akron City Council on June 15 approved a conditional‑use permit to allow a daycare business center to operate at 943 Springdale Street, voting 12–0 during a special meeting.
Planning staff member Mr. Hosblock told the council the petitioner — KidsSpace — would lease part of a 5,000 ft² community center and occupy an unused meeting room of about 1,000 ft² plus a file room, kitchen and bathroom. The facility would operate during the school year Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., employ two to three staff members and serve roughly 10 to 15 preschool‑age children. A fenced play area sits south of the building and the property includes 11 parking spaces in front.
A representative for Kidsspace LLC, speaking during the public hearing, said the program will “provide exorbitant support to the families that live in the North Hill neighborhood,” and stressed that local childcare reduces transportation barriers and helps parents access work. Planning staff and the planning commission recommended approval.
Councilman Kamer moved a favorable committee report and asked for passage. The council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance, 12–0. The city noted the property was conditionally zoned for a housing complex and that a daycare is classified as a retail use requiring conditional approval.
The ordinance allows the small preschool to operate in the community center; the petitioner must comply with any building, health and licensing requirements before opening. The council adjourned after approving this and three other items on its special‑meeting agenda.
