Akron City Council on June 15 approved an ordinance authorizing a conditional use for a small parking lot at 921 Cordova Avenue, voting 12–0 during a special meeting.
Planning staff presented the proposal as a way to facilitate the future sale and redevelopment of a vacant city‑owned building at 1474 Copley Road. Staff said the Cordova parcel measures about 60 by 112 feet and, as conceived, would provide space for approximately 18 additional vehicles, include a garbage enclosure, and require landscaping along the street frontage. To reduce potential conflicts with pedestrians and vehicles, six of the existing parking spaces along the west side of the adjacent building would be eliminated, leaving two accessible spaces.
Because part of the proposed parking would extend into an alley right‑of‑way, staff said a licensing agreement with the city will be needed. A 6‑foot solid fence would screen adjacent residential properties and the plan includes a 20‑foot setback from Cordova Avenue. Planning staff and the planning commission recommended approval; no public comments were offered on the item.
Councilman Kamer moved a favorable report and the council approved the ordinance unanimously, 12–0. The sale of the city‑owned property at 1474 Copley Road will be brought to council once a purchaser is identified.
