The Traffic and Transportation Commission on June 15 voted unanimously to approve a resident request to pursue a traffic signal at Northwest 63rd Street and North Council Road, but staff cautioned the installation may require Federal Aviation Administration review because the intersection sits under the glide path for WY Post airport.
Residents from the Blackwood Farms neighborhood presented petitions and photos describing rapid nearby development and constrained access that they say creates a safety risk for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. "We need this stoplight before we hit the 2,000 car level," petitioner Carolyn Crowder told commissioners, citing growth in two adjacent developments and repeated close calls.
Staff said signal warrant conditions B and two are satisfied for the location and summarized technical constraints. "Because this location is immediately down from a runway at WY Post airport, any approved traffic signal would need FAA review to ensure it does not create hazards for air navigation," staff told the commission, noting pole height and lighting are potential sticking points.
Commissioners discussed interim and alternative fixes if FAA clearance is not possible, including an all-way stop as an interim control and a roundabout as a potential alternative that would avoid tall signal poles. "If it can't be approved by FAA, we would re-evaluate for a roundabout," a staff member said.
Commissioner Cornet moved to approve the request and Commissioner Martinez seconded. The motion passed 7–0. Staff said they will forward the approved signal request to the appropriate reviewers, report back on FAA findings, and pursue interim measures as needed.
What happens next: staff will seek FAA input on pole-height and lighting constraints, return to the commission with findings, and implement interim traffic-control measures (such as an all-way stop) if immediate action is needed while long-term funding is pursued.
