At a daily briefing, the United Nations said it had not seen the text of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran that reportedly provides for an immediate ceasefire and further negotiations.
Spokesperson Steph told reporters that the UN welcomed reports of a ceasefire framework and expressed appreciation for mediation roles played by Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. On questions about the memorandum’s implications for Lebanon, she said the UN’s position is to see an end to fighting, to support the primacy of national authorities and for all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The spokesperson said implementation questions depend on seeing the memorandum text and that any step to terminate Security Council resolutions would require a Security Council decision. On whether the UN would be represented at an anticipated signing ceremony, she said she did not believe the UN would attend but that details remained unclear.
Why it matters: Diplomatic agreements between major countries can affect conflicts and regional stability; the UN’s role in implementing or monitoring such agreements depends on the written terms and Security Council mandate.
Reporters pressed for procedural details and for clarification of the UN’s role; the briefing reiterated that determining termination or modification of Security Council resolutions lies with the Security Council itself. The briefing did not show that the memorandum’s full text had been presented to the UN.
