At a ribbon-cutting for the redeveloped Eureka Recreation Center, the event's speakers described a multimillion-dollar renovation, new community amenities and public art created with local input.
The artist in residence said the building "hasn't seen any type of renovation since it was built in 1965" and described expanded community space including an open gym where people can meet and gather. The speaker said they have served as the artist in residence for the project since 2022 and emphasized engaging residents about the art and design for the center.
The project also includes two new murals, which the speaker credited to S. Ross Brown, described in remarks as a Richmond-based artist. "The art is paying homage to our rich and diverse community here in Northwest," the artist said, framing the renovation as rooted in neighborhood stories and participation.
A speaker identified as a city official highlighted the facility's sustainability features, saying the center includes geothermal and solar systems and that "the city has a commitment to sustainability." The official said the community will use the center to showcase Northwest Reno's pride to the broader city.
Speakers described the renovation as a major capital effort. "This $14.4 million investment represents the city's single largest project investment in parks and recreation history," the artist said.
The ceremony emphasized community involvement in design and art and noted the center's new amenities and energy systems as features intended to serve residents and visitors. No formal votes or motions were recorded at the event.
