The policy subcommittee presented two first-read items on June 10: a comprehensive update to the district wellness policy (ADF) to align with state compliance monitoring and current nutrition and wellness practices, and a new policy (ECAB) setting expectations for public access to school grounds and authorized building use.
The wellness policy update reiterates federal and state nutrition standards for school meals and competitive foods, clarifies free/universal-meal processes and privacy protections, encourages farm-to-school where feasible, and restates expectations for physical education, recess and staff wellness. Committee members asked for small wording and punctuation fixes and requested that a line referring to "local wellness policies meeting minutes" be changed to "local wellness committee meeting minutes." School leaders said the revisions were based on Department of Elementary and Secondary Education compliance guidance and input from food-service leadership.
The new ECAB draft clarifies that grounds are available for public use from dawn until dusk for intended uses, that access during school hours is restricted to students, staff and visitors with legitimate business, and that superintendent/designee authorization will be required for after-hours building access. Security and public-safety partners requested clearer language to support enforcement in nighttime situations, district staff said.
Both drafts were presented for first read; committee members recommended small edits and asked that the final drafts be returned for adoption after those corrections.
